The phenomenon occurs when strong westerlies lift up large amounts of sand and dust from deserts and transport them to other regions in East Asia.　It is a seasonal ordeal for many people.

Weather officials are warning that the sand could stick to laundry hanging outdoors and worsen symptoms for people with pollen allergies and asthma. Caution will be required when airing laundry outdoors.

According to the Meteorological Agency, visibility in Tokyo and Osaka fell below 10 km on Wednesday. It may drop below 5 km. In such cases, sand might be noticeable on the surfaces of clothes and cars, and potential traffic disruptions could occur.
