2024年夏、日本人の主食のお米が、高騰して、スーパーの店頭から消えた「令和の米騒動」

In the summer of 2024, the public uproar over a rice shortage in Japan intensified as people faced soaring prices and empty shelves.

猛暑によるお米の品質悪化や、南海トラフ地震臨時情報（巨大地震注意）の発令や、買いだめ＝hoardingが原因とされていました。“騒動”は辞書ではriot（暴動）disturbance（社会的動乱、妨害）等が出てきますが、今回のニュースではuproar＝どよめき、非難、民の怒りや不満の意思表示で、public uproar over ～についての世間の騒動がぴったりきそうです。

5キロ5000円もの値を呼ぶ銘柄もありました。

その後、品薄は収まりましたが、農相の言う様に『新米が出れば価格は落ち着く』とはならず高値が続きます。

The agriculture minister said, 'Prices will stabilize when the newly harvested rice comes out. However, the prices have persisted.

2月14日、農林水産省が政府備蓄米の市場放出向けた詳細を発表。

Japan's Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries has announced details of the planned release of government-stored rice onto the market.

同省は、流通の滞りと説明しています。価格の先高観、業者や一部農家の売り渋りがあるという見方です。

The ministry attributes the persistent high prices primarily to a distribution bottleneck. It pointed out, "Small-scale collectors and farmers held onto stock, anticipating higher prices, which clogged distribution."

そんな中、恵方巻は楽しまれていたようです。

It is customary to eat an ehōmaki sushi roll on Setsubun, an annual festival held on the day before the beginning of spring according to the old lunar calendar. To bring good fortune for the year, one must face the designated lucky direction, make a wish, and eat the entire roll in silence.

恵方に向って無言で丸かぶりするとその年は幸運が訪れると言われますが、廃棄された恵方巻もかなりの量とのことです。

3月に入ると、作付け前にもかかわらず、業者が買い付けに訪れ値段競争が始まっているというニュースもありました。

A steady reduction in rice acreage has led to an excessive curbing of rice production, resulting in the current shortage and price hikes.
